10-13 June 2004Sixth direct elections to the European Parliament. Largest elections with 450 million citizens in 25 Member States of the European Union. Overall turnout was 45.5 per cent. The EPP-ED Group wins again being, with 278 Members, the largest political Group in the European Parliament. It is also the only Group composed of deputies from all 25 Member States and the only Group with more than 200 Members.

The EPP-ED Group wins for the third time since 1999 being, with 265 Members, the largest political Group in the European Parliament. It is also the only Group with more than 200 Members. At the same time, it changed its name to the EPP Group - losing the "ED" (European Democrats) part of its name following the departure of the British Conservative MEPs.

A new beginning for Europe: The Lisbon Treaty marks an important turning point in the evolution of the European institutions and the relations they will now have with each other. The European Parliament has come out stronger from the Lisbon Treaty, because it becomes a co-decision maker, equal to the Council of Ministers, on all topics that fall under EU jurisdiction.

18 September 2010In Memoriam: Egon A. Klepsch (1930-2010), former President of the European Parliament and former Chairman of the EPP Group: MEPs mourned the loss of former colleague, Egon Klepsch. Mr Klepsch was President of the European Parliament from 1992-1994 and Chairman of the EPP Group from 1977-1982 and 1984-1992. A fervent European, Egon Klepsch helped build a free and democratic Europe based on his Christian-democratic beliefs.
13-15 October 2010EPP Group Study Days in Madeira: The EPP Group held its Study Days from 13 October to 15 October in Madeira, Portugal. The main items of discussion included: 'The creation of a European Force of Civil Protection' and 'EU policy on outermost regions after the new Lisbon Treaty', in addition to discussions on 'Free Internet - Do we pay with our data?' and 'The use of search engines and social networks on the Internet'. The EPP Group study trip to Madeira also focussed on the review of the EU budget and the preparation of the next multiannual financial framework.
